As always, the 2022 Independence Day Holidays in Nicaragua are on the 14th and 15th of September and are Statutory Holidays (Feriados). September 14th is the celebration of the Battle of San Jacinto in 1856 and the September 15th commemorates the independence of Nicaragua (and Central America) from Spain in 1821.

On the 14th and 15th of September, all workers will receive compulsory rest days with pay as per Article 66 of the Labor Code of Nicaragua.

Under Article 69 of the Labor Code of Nicaragua, those workers that are required to work on those days will receive double time for the time worked. This includes; “businesses affected by the agricultural cycle, different economic activities and the social and security of the country”. If the employee wishes, and by agreement with the employer, they may work at regular time and take another compensated day off in lieu.

State Workers

This year, government employees (Central and Civic) will enjoy a break from Saturday September the 10th to Sunday September the 18th for the 2022 Independence Day Holidays. Workers and their families will be encouraged to enjoy the many attractions the country has to offer. In addition, INTUR are promoting packages and excursions throughout the country for families and tourists as they celebrate the 201st Independence day of Central America (15th of September) and the 166 years since the Battle of San Jacinto in Nicaragua.

IVA Tax Exemption

Following the successful IVA exemption campaign during last year’s Bicentennial Independence holidays, the Government of Nicaragua has announced a similar promotion from Monday the 12th of September until Sunday the 18th for this years 2022 Independence Day Holidays. This order exempts tourism companies in the food, beverage and lodging sectors from having to collect the 15% Value Added Tax (Goods and Service Tax) during those days.

Last Year 2021

The IVA exemption program was organized by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (MHCP), the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (INTUR) and the General Directorate of Income (DGI).

The idea was to promote tourism and get more Nicaraguan families out enjoying the patriotic events around the country.

Businesses on the IVA system were required to register with DGI online using the Ventana24/7 “Fiesta Patria” icon on the menu page at Ventana 24/7.

Businesses already registered for IVA had to pre-register their participation.
