The Nicaraguan Tourism Institute (INTUR), working with the municipal authorities, as well as the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) and the National Police, have been working on tourist signage in Nicaragua.

The aim of the project is to provide and erect 182 tourist signs in the departments of Boaco, Chontales, Río San Juan, León, Managua and Masaya as well as the two Autonomous Regions of the Caribbean Coast, RAAN and RAAS. The idea is to improve visitor satisfaction by enabling them to easily find the particular tourist attraction they are looking for and to optimize their travel time.

The design of the tourist signs complies with the technical standards set by the Central American Manual of Uniform Devices for Traffic Control that comes under the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) and corresponding international standards.

The Department of Chontales was a recent beneficiary of the tourist signage in Nicaragua with road signs being installed marking the directions to tourist attractions in five municipalities, namely; Cuapa, Juigalpa, Acoyapa, Villa Sandino and La Libertad.

Tourist spots such as the Santuario de la Virgen de Cuapa (Sanctuary of the Virgin of Cuapa, El Corozo in the Municipality of La Libertad, the Juigalpan Community Museum, Thomas Belt Zoo and the main access route to the Amerrique Nature Reserve as well as locations in Acoyapa and Villa Sandino.

The National Police Traffic Department and the MTI assisted INTUR and the local authorities with the proper distance marking as well as location of each sign and ensured they compiled with the regulations.
