One of my favorite web sites; infobae.com has done it again with another jam packed, name dropping article on Nicaragua, this time with a spin around the country on a “Nature Trek”.
You might remember back in May of this year, infobae.com featured 13 of Nicaragua’s “Natural Paradisiacal Locations” worthy of consideration when you plan your next vacation.
Nature Trek Nicaragua
The article introduces some interesting stats, such as; 18% of Nicaragua is protected land, the country has 7% of the world’s biodiversity, 7 active volcanoes, 700 species of birds and two beaches where 5 of the world’s 7 turtle species come ashore to lay their eggs.
It then takes off around the country, in no particular order, beginning in Chinandega with the Estero Padre Ramos Natural Reserve, kayaking through mangroves before moving on to the Juan Venado Island in León as well as Pacific sunsets at Playas; Hermosa, Miramar, El Velero and El Tránsito.
Infobae takes you to the Caribbean side and the Cayos Miskitos Biological Reserve (70 islands, islets, coral reefs and keys and then further south the Pearl Cays and the white sand beaches of The Corn Islands.
Being a new “Granadino” the mention of Mombacho volcano in Granada (an imposing 1,400 meter mountain with a cloud forest reserve and ecosystem) got my attention.
Down to the Ometepe Biosphere Reserve which according to infobae is apparently (and quite probably) “the only island in the world that has two volcanoes (Concepción and Maderas) on it and sits in the middle of a freshwater lake”.
Across to the Pacific again and the Río Escalante “Chacocente Wildlife Refuge” in Carazo for more turtle nesting beaches before heading north to the mountains and jungles of Jinotega, Matagalpa and Estelí where the “Selva Negra Ecolodge and La Bastilla Ecolodge stand out”.
Also getting a mention up north are the worthy contenders of Tisey-La Estanzuela and Miraflor Moropotente nature reserves as well as Mogotón Hill, the highest point in Nicaragua with its pine and cloud forests.
The Río Coco Geopark is the first in Central America to be designated by UNESCO and contains the Somoto Canyon.
Back down south to Río San Juan and the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve (one of the best preserved natural reserves in Nicaragua).
Also in the same zone is the Solentiname Archipelago, a “National Monument” comprising of 36 islands with lots of cultural and historical wealth.
