As of yesterday, Friday, December 3rd, 2021, the Costa Rica bus company TransNica is offering their luxury bus service on a new Nicaragua to Costa Rica return route that goes around the east side of Lake Nicaragua.

The “new and faster route” will make use of the border crossing (south east corner of the Lake) at Tablillas/Los Chiles near San Carlos in the Department of Río San Juan, Nicaragua which crosses into the Costa Rican Province of Alajuela.

Schedule

To start with, TransNica have said they will be providing a weekly service. As the route becomes more well-known and the demand increases, they will review and adjust the frequency accordingly.

The opening schedule shows a 1a.m. Friday departure from San José, Costa Rica.

The bus will leave Managua, Nicaragua at 7am on Saturday to return to San José.

Route

For those traveling north from Costa Rica, there will be opportunities to board along the route between San José and Tablillas, for example; Naranjo, Ciudad Quesada, Muelle, Santa Rosa de Pocosol and Los Chiles.

On the Nicaragua to Costa Rica route, there will be stops between the border post and Managua at; San Carlos de Nicaragua, Acoyapa and Juigalpa.

Tickets for a one way trip are US $30 and are available at all TransNica terminals and agencies in Nicaragua and Costa Rica as well as on-line at the TransNica website; www.transnica.com

TransNica History

TransNica came about in 1990 with a plan to provide a transport services to the many Nicaraguans who has settled in Cost Rica during the 1980’s and who were in a position to travel between the two countries. Over time, the service began to include the growing tourism sector traveling through the region from the north or the south and their routes have now expanded to include Honduras.

Each TransNica bus has air conditioning, televisions, a sound system, reclining chairs, washroom facilities, a refrigerator and coffee maker. During the trips, passengers will have a cabin attendant to help them and to serve snacks as well as assist with migration procedures at the border posts.
