On Monday the 1st of March 2021, the Municipal Council of Masaya unanimously voted for the construction of the new baseball stadium for Masaya, the “Estadio de Béisbol Roberto Clemente”. It was a legal step in the building of the new home of Las Fieras del San Fernando of Nicaragua’s professional league; “The German Pomares Ordóñez Superior Baseball National Championship”.

The construction has been delayed since building plans and artists renderings were announced last year for the new baseball stadium for Masaya to be built on the same land as the old one. The government announced that the tender bids will opened soon and construction will begin forty days later.

The new stadium has been designed to meet international baseball standards and construction is scheduled to be completed in three stages.

Trivia; Masaya, “The City of Flowers” (formerly Mazatlán) gets its name from the Nahuatl language of Nicaragua. Masaya comes from the word Masaltque, which means deer, “The land of the deer”.

The project is being undertaken by the Mayor’s Office of Masaya, the Government of Nicaragua and the Nicaraguan Institute of Sports (IND by its acronym in Spanish).

The three level stadium will have a total construction area of 17,688 square meters, made up of the field area at 11,820 square meters and the buildings at 5,060 square meters. The stadium capacity will be doubled from 2,000 to 4,000 spectators.

Level one will be public and contain areas for restaurants, cafeterias and vendors. There will also be a hall of fame center and washrooms. In addition there will be areas for storage and the players facilities will include changing rooms, showers and of course the all-important dugouts.

The second level will include a public area with part covered and part open bleachers, areas for selling food and beverages as well as restaurants, cafeterias and more restrooms.

The third level will be a private area with an area for the media, five VIP private boxes as well as row seating for more spectators.

Outside, on the stadium complex will be parking, vendor’s kiosks and a recreational park with seating.

Trivia; “El San Fernando” have been around since 1915 when they were formed by an amalgamation of four different teams. They were an immediate success winning their first 24 games in a row. The other team using the SF logo is of course the San Francisco Giants of the MLB who were first in New York from 1885 and then San Francisco, California since 1957. So it just might be that Nicaragua’s Las Fieras del San Fernando would win the argument on who was first to use the famous SF logo!
