The Venezuelan airline Conviasa returns to Managua in December. This time, due to flight entry restrictions, and the advantage of their “Fifth Freedom Right” (see below), Conviasa will fly between Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport (PTY) and Managua’s Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport (MGA).

Prior to the Covid pandemic the flight stopped in Havana, however these flights have been suspended since March of 2020.

Tocumen is a huge regional hub that links flights from North, Central and South America, the Caribbean as well as Europe and Asia. Therefore, the addition of these two weekly flights might help someone out with an onward connection.

Conviasa will be using their Embraer E190 airplane which has an average of 100 seats depending on configuration. The E190 is used for regional and longer routes.

The twice weekly flights (Friday and Sunday) will recommence on Friday December 3rd 2021 with the following itinerary;

Panama Tocumen to Managua (MGA) – Flight V0 5979, Departs Panama at 3:50pm and arrives in Managua at 4:20pm

Managua (MGA) to Panama Tocumen – Flight V0 5978, Departs Managua at 6:00am and arrives in Panama at 8:30am.

Trivia: The Venezuelan airline Conviasa uses an acronym for their operating name. Their actual legal name is “Consorcio Venezolano de Industrias Aeronáuticas y Servicios Aéreos, S.A. (Venezuelan Consortium of Aeronautics Industries and Air Services).

Currently Venezuela is only allowed direct flights to Bolivia, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Russia and Turkey. However, they have the rights to move passengers between Panama and Nicaragua on an airline industry rule known as “fifth freedom rights”.

The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) recognizes the “Fifth Freedom of The Air” (or fifth freedom rights) as “The right or privilege, in respect of scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State to put down and to take on, in the territory of the first State, traffic coming from or destined to a third State”.

Conviasa is a Venezuelan airline headquartered at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, (near Caracus), Venezuela. It is Venezuela’s flag carrier and largest airline with domestic and international flights to the Caribbean and South America. Conviasa Reservations
