Easter 2022 Statistics for Crime and Traffic

The National Police have announced the Easter 2022 statistics as part of the Summer Plan for Easter Week (Semana Santa) for the eight days from Palm Sunday the 10th of April 2022 to Easter Sunday the 17th of April 2022.

The Summer Plan was implemented in all 153 municipalities and required 14,200 police officers using up to 3,260 vehicles and motorcycles.

When compared with last year, there were ten more deaths from traffic accidents, six fewer injuries from accidents, four fewer homicides, 20 fewer robberies with intimidation and 110 fewer reported crimes.

Nationwide, 141 out of 153 municipalities did not experience a homicide and 121 out of 153 municipalities reported no deaths from traffic accidents.  Source: Menos delincuencia y accidentes en la Semana Santa 2022 en Nicaragua

Police

The National Police answered 40,987 calls received by the 118 emergency lines.

They followed up on just over 900 official complaints; the most important resulted in the investigations of seven (7) homicides and forty-two (42) robberies with intimidation.

Road blocks and check stops produced 81.3 kilos of cocaine and 30 kilos of marijuana that was seized by the police. In addition, 32 firearms and 365 sharp weapons.

Roads

Traffic accidents continue to be a big factor in the Easter 2022 statistics.

The National Police Traffic Department (Transito) were kept busy with 975 traffic accidents, A total of (30) people lost their lives on the roads during Easter Week and another 32 were reported as injured.

Seventeen (17) of those killed were believed to be on motorcycles.

This made a total of thirty-seven deaths from crime and traffic accidents during Holy Week.

Police estimate that up to five million people traveled the various roads across the country, visiting any one (or more) of up to 623 tourist centers and resort areas.

Traffic Stats in Perspective

In all of 2021, the National Traffic Directorate confirmed there were 45,927 traffic accidents on Nicaraguan roads. There were 3,332 injuries and 904 fatalities.

Average annual accidents; 125 per day (129 per day Easter 2022)

Average annual injures; 9 per day (4 per day Easter 2022)

Average annual fatalities; 2.5 per day (3.75 per day Easter 2022)

Nicaraguan Red Cross

The “Cruz Roja” stats showed a decrease in vacationers requiring their services (35,274) when compared with last year, 2021 (45,000 services). This included a reported 168 people rescued from experiencing difficulty in the water (ocean, river or lake).

Health authorities have not yet released the number of deaths from drowning during Holy Week. However; one news source reported that at least ten people had drowned over the course of the week and alcohol was reported as a contributory factor in at least 4 of those drownings.
