Every year on the Monday after the holiday, the National Police give a press conference with regards to the statistics for Easter Week in Nicaragua, which this year was Sunday March 28th to Sunday April 4th.
SUMMER PLAN 2021
With 14,000 officers deployed across the country, the National Police of Nicaragua put into effect their Summer Plan for Easter Week. This plan brings together all of the emergency services as well as other government departments (local and national) to minimize injuries, loss of life and damage to property during the biggest national vacation of the year.
Road safety measures included inspecting all types of transport, public and private for license, registration and insurance irregularities as well as spot checks for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Round the clock patrols were made on foot, in vehicles and also on the water. The tourist destinations, as well as the various cultural, religious, sporting and recreational activities received priority attention. Police were also on duty in key neighborhoods, markets, bus terminals and border crossings. The firearm and weapon prohibition was in force from Saturday March 27th to Sunday April 4th.
In addition to the summer plan, the National Police maintained their 24 hour a day services for regular police duties such as the 118 emergency services.
RESULTS/STATISTICS
This year they announced that there were no homicides or deaths from traffic accidents in or at what they called the “Spas, tourist destinations and processions”.
- However, outside of the actual boundary of the beaches and holiday hot spots there were 8 homicides.
- Elsewhere on the roads, 6 people died as a result of collisions and another 16 were injured.
- During the Holy Week, the police responded to 16,349 calls received by the 118 Emergency System.
- By the municipalities, 95% of the country’s municipalities were free of homicides (that’s 146 out of a total of 153 municipalities). Likewise, there were no traffic fatalities in 145 of the municipalities, representing, representing 95%.
- Officers working on the Summer Plan 2021 seized 25 industrial firearms, 4 artisanal firearms and a total of 259 various sharp weapons.
- They also seized a little over 77 kilos of cocaine and 524 pounds of Marijuana.
RED CROSS/CRUZ ROJA NICARAGÜENSE (CRN)
Auner García, the General Director of the CRN announced that there were 6 deaths due to drowning.
Lifesaving incidents for this year were counted as 298, much higher than the 70 reported in 2020.
