This year, Easter Week officially begins on March 28th with Palm Sunday and ends on April 4th, which is Easter Sunday (Domingo de Resurrección). During the week, Holy Thursday and Good Friday (April 1st and April 2nd) are Statutory Holidays.

State Workers

The government has announced that the Easter Week holidays for state workers will begin at the close of business this Friday the 26th of March and they will be back at work on Tuesday the 6th of April.

This will give them 10 clear days of vacation time for Easter. The Minister of Labor will be making the ministerial decree over the next few days.

It was emphasized that Friday 26th of March will be the last day of formal work, however there are always essential services working, for example; Police, Military, Health, Immigration, SINAPRED (Disasters) etc.

In addition to the vacation announcement, the state workers were also informed that they would receive their April 1st salary in advance. Salaries will start being paid on Wednesday the 24th of March with the Ministry of Health (MINSA) workers. The Ministry of Education will follow on Thursday the 25th of March and the remaining institutions will be paid on Friday 26th of March.

Statutory Holidays

As usual, the Thursday and Friday of Easter Week will be Statutory Holidays or “Feriados” as per Article 66 of the Labor Code of Nicaragua. So, Thursday 1st of April will be “Jueves Santo” and Friday 2nd of April will be “Viernes Santo”. These will be days off with pay.

The Ministry of Labor (MITRAB) exempts businesses from this provision if the work is of a nature or due to the nature of the needs of the business do not permit an interruption of this sort. In that case, each of those days worked will be paid at double pay.
