Once again United Airlines, American Airlines and Aeroméxico have postponed the return of their flights to Nicaragua.

The revised date or the “possibility of flights” is now April 1st, almost one year since they stopped flying to Nicaragua. They stay on the ground with Spirit Airlines who still have not given a firm date for the return of their popular low cost Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Managua route.

Since July of 2020, when the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport re-opened after the Covid-19 related closure; various airlines have announced dates for their return, only to postpone those dates on a monthly basis. Nine months and a new year later the postponements continue.

The hopes of a busy Easter and the return of more passengers on the Miami-Managua route have faded. International travelers as well as many Nicaraguans planning on a visit home for Easter will have to rely on some scheduled flights from Avianca as well as a few other charter flights.

Travel agencies in Nicaragua such as Aeromundo have updated their social media with the latest proposed return dates.

The travel and tourism industry blame the postponement on strict rules and procedures introduced last July by the Nicaraguan Institute of Civil Aeronautics (INAC).

Since Avianca returned to the Nicaraguan skies last September they have provided a fairly consistent but limited service with triangular routes between Miami, Managua and San Salvador airports. They have not been without problems, but in fairness to them, they have managed to work with the requirements and conditions for 6 months.

Copa returned to Managua with charter flights from their hub in Panama on a “test” basis for January and will have been flying four times a month in February. They say they will continue that schedule if the demand is there.

In addition, Eastern Airlines will be providing charter flights which have been approved by the Government of Nicaragua and will provide flights for March and April, catering to travelers from the USA wanting to visit Nicaragua for Easter.
