Low cost carrier Frontier Airlines is now flying into Guanacaste Airport, Costa Rica (formerly Liberia and still using the IATA airport code of LIR) as of November 11th 2021. These additional flights will give even more options to those favoring landing at Liberia when visiting Nicaragua.

The ever popular 186 seat Airbus A320 airplane will be used by the low costs carrier for the twice weekly nonstop flights from Orlando, Florida to Costa Rica on Thursdays and Saturdays. This will be one of 16 routes announced by Frontier for the winter season 2021/2022.

Flight details have been announced as; Departs Orlando at 11:30 am, arriving at Liberia at 1:46 pm. The return flight to Orlando leaves Guanacaste at 2:51 pm. This is a comfortable schedule for those travelling to or from Nicaragua.

Daniel Schurz, Senior Vice President of Frontier Airlines said that 13 of the Orlando flights launched this month, and another 3 will start in December. According to Schurz; “Frontier offer the most nonstop routes of any airline at Orlando and now service 81 destinations with nonstop flights, 5 of them being the international routes of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico and The Bahamas.

Guanacaste Airport in Liberia is a popular choice for visitors to Nicaragua and has become it’s “de facto” second international airport during the Covid-19 restrictions.

Visitors to the popular southeast tourist region of Nicaragua find the driving time from Liberia to Rivas can be about the same as it is from Managua. That includes the border crossing time at Peñas Blancas where the new facilities make that crossing a lot easier and faster than it used to be.

Last July, Nica-Biz reported that the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport at Liberia would be rebranded as Guanacaste Airport to “Improve the visibility and attractiveness of Guanacaste in international markets”.

The Orlando metropolitan area, with a population of over 2.5 million people is well connected to the rest of the world. The Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the 13th-busiest airport in the United States (75 million visitors in 2018).
