Puerto Granada

Granada (as well as Altagracia and San Carlos) have what is known as a “Regional Lake Ports” (Puertos Regional Lacustre) on Lake Nicaragua (a.k.a. Cocibolca).

Puerto Granada sits on east end of the historic City of Granada and is only 45 kilometers from Managua. The port is north of Las Isletas de Granada, a group 365 islands which were created when the neighboring Mombacho Volcano was formed.

A famous attraction and photographic backdrop is the concrete pier that was built in 1965 and is 266 meters long and 5 meters wide.

The port can accept passengers as well as cargo, the latter can be stored in a large warehouse or “bodega” and a railway line running down the middle of the pier can easily move cargo back and forth along the dock.

Puerto Altagracia

Located on Ometepe Island, 53 kilometers from the Port of Granada (four hours by ferry) is the Port of Altagracia, as well as the town and municipality of the same name. Ometepe Island is officially in the Department of Rivas. Altagracia is the second largest town on the island of Ometepe. The largest being Moyogalpa, also a port town with ferry service to San Jorge on the mainland.

Puerto San Carlos

Located in the department of Río San Juan is the Port of San Carlos. The Río San Juan department was created in 1957 from parts of the departments of Chontales and Zelaya departments. San Carlos is the capital of the departmental which also includes the Solentiname Islands archipelago and the San Juan River (the border of Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
