This week, the first gas turbines and electromechanical equipment arrived for the New Fortress LNG Power Plant in Nicaragua. They arrived at Puerto Corinto, about 100 kilometers north by road from Puerto Sandino, their final destination.
In our February 20th, 2021 article; Power Generation in Nicaragua – Fire, Sun, Wind and Rain Nica-Biz we talked about the 300 MW LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) power plant being built by New Fortress Energy LLC (NFE) at Puerto Sandino on the Pacific coast.
As previously stated, the location of the plant adjacent to the ENATREL “Sandino” Substation makes it an easy connection to the national grid as well as the SIEPAC (System of Electrical Interconnection of the Countries of Central America) grid for selling surplus energy directly to countries from Panama to Guatemala.
When completed, the “Central Puerto Sandino” LNG Power Plant in Nicaragua will be the largest capacity power plant in the history of the country and one of only two like it in Central America, the second being in Panama. The investment in the 315 megawatt facility is US $ 700 million and it has the capacity to produce 2.2 million MWh (megawatt hours) of energy per year, representing 50 percent of the current demand in the country.
There has been some criticism that the power plant isn’t a renewable energy project; however it does have a much lower CO2-to-energy ratio, therefore is much cleaner and friendlier to the environment than some of the older diesel power plants running on bunker fuel. The new NFE power plant will enable some of those older electricity generators to be decommissioned.
