More Traffic Patrols

The National Police of Nicaragua will send out more traffic patrols as a result of the rise in fatal accidents. There were 826 collisions reported in the country during the week of Monday the 22nd of August to Sunday 28th of August 2022. A total of 17 people died in those accidents (5 more than the previous week) and 29 were injured (1 more than last week). Of those who died, 9 were drivers, 3 were passenger and 5 were pedestrians.

Speed continues to be the number one factor in the causes of these accidents. Of the 17 people who died, 8 were as a result of excessive speed, driving while intoxicated claimed 3 more lives and the other 8 were attributed to various other causes.

The head of the National Traffic Directorate of the National Police, General Commissioner Vilma Reyes, presented the statistics at her regular news conference.

On the prevention side, the top traffic officer revealed that 7,860 people had taken their Drivers Education Seminar. This included motorcycle riders, motorcycle taxis, urban collectivo transport drivers and also included new drivers as well as those sent for re-education as a result of penalties and fines (Multas).

Special Plan

In her daily address, Rosario Murillo (the Vice President of Nicaragua) reported that the National Police have been directed by the president to present a National Road Emergency Plan to address the high number of accidents, injuries and deaths on Nicaraguan roads.

This plan will be designed to “Address, reduce and stop irresponsible drivers, especially those who drive under the influence of alcohol that cause these collisions that leave families with so much suffering and pain because of the lives taken.”

This plan will attempt to reduce and stop irresponsible drivers, in particular those who continue to drive under the influence of alcohol.

According to the Office of the President, this plan will be presented “no later than this Wednesday” and will be implemented across the country using more traffic patrols by traffic officers (Transito).
