Today, Wednesday the 3rd of November, 2021, the National Police (Policía Nacional or PN) announced their measures aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the Nicaraguan General Elections this coming weekend.
The Nicaraguan General Elections take place on Sunday 7th November 2021.
There is nothing too out of the ordinary in the security measures when compared to previous general elections.
The Security Measures and Prohibitions were announced by Commissioner General Jaime Vanegas, in his capacity as Inspector General of the National Police of Nicaragua.
The main prohibitions include;
Alcohol
No sales (commercialization) of alcoholic beverages in or at “supermarkets, grocery stores, bars, convenience stores, liquor stores, entertainment centers, restaurants and the like, as well as on public roads” (among other locations) from two (2pm) in the afternoon on Saturday, November 6th 2021 until six (6am) in the morning on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021.
Firearms and Weapons
No carrying of firearms, sharp weapons or ammunition from 6pm on Friday, November 5th, until 6pm on Friday, November 12th, 2021.
The exception to the firearms prohibition is the National Police, the Military, and members of the Penitentiary System.
Chemicals, toxic and explosive substances (industrial or craft)
It is prohibited to transfer, transport, distribute or otherwise handle chemical, toxic and explosive substances (for industrial or craft use) from 6:00 in the evening on Saturday, November 6th 2021 until 12 noon on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021 until 12:00 noon on Tuesday 09 of November. The exception being the transfer or transportation of fuels and liquefied gas by duly authorized companies and persons.
Security Perimeters and Traffic Control
Vanegas announced certain security perimeters and traffic regulations that will be established in locations where the National, Departmental and Municipal Computer Centers will be in operation across the entire country and the traffic regulation in those sectors.
The National Police will regulate traffic at these locations from 8am on Saturday, November 6th, 2021 until 6pm on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021.
In Managua, those locations will be:
- The National Computer Center, located in the Supreme Electoral Council (Consejo Supremo Electoral-CSE) building next to Metrocentro Shopping Mall.
- Nicaraguan Institute of Sports (Instituto Nicaragüense de Deportes-IND)
- National University of Engineering (Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería-UNI)
- National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua-UNAN, Managua)
- Colegio Maestro Gabriel
- National Agrarian University (Universidad Nacional Agraria-UNA)
