Government of Nicaragua – The President of the Republic of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega has maintained his position on businesses staying open and people having the right to go to work.
The president’s comments came after a call by one NGO for lockdowns due to the current increase in coronavirus cases.
Speaking at a National Police event on Monday 6th of September 2021, the president noted that “confinamiento” (lockdown) was not the solution, as has been proven in other countries that tried this method (of controlling the spread of the Covid -19 virus). “Confining people to their homes caused more deaths and other family problems” said the president.
Ortega insisted that in addition to the vaccine program, the solution is everyone being responsible, taking care of themselves, and continuing to follow the essential MINSA hygiene measures (hand washing, maintaining a physical distance and the wearing of masks).
The president congratulated the Nicaraguan people for being responsible in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and remained confident that Nicaraguans know how to use caution when going outside or when in the workplace. He urged all citizens to continue taking the essential hygienic measures to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
In the last week, the vaccination program received a major boost with the delivery of 130,000 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia and also a delivery from the COVAX Initiative of 333,700 doses of AstraZeneca.
The Government of Nicaragua also reported that they had been informed of more deliveries for September but without exact dates. These will be 233,470 of the Pfizer vaccine from COVAX, 138,000 doses of Sinopharm from COVAX and also from Spain; deliveries of 201,600 and 499,200 as yet unspecified vaccines.
The COVAX Initiative, “the largest and most complex global immunization operation in history” has a goal of distributing at least 2 billion doses of Covid -19 vaccines this year, 1.3 billion of those will go to developing countries.
