While Nicaragua waits for the 800,000 doses of the new Sputnik Light, the country of Spain donated vaccines to the Nicaraguan Covid program.
Almost half a million doses were delivered yesterday by Spain through the COVAX Initiative.
In the early hours of Sunday 26th of September, 2021 a delivery of 499,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived at the Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport in Managua, Nicaragua.
In a 6am Tweet, The Embassy of Spain announced the arrival of the much needed vaccines for the Nicaraguan people. They said it was “The fourth batch to reach Nicaragua from Spain and with this delivery the total vaccines donated by Spain was now 1,130,020 doses which consolidated their position as the main international donor of vaccines to Nicaragua”.
Spain donated the vaccines through a joint multilateral response to the pandemic, particularly to Latin American and Caribbean countries with which Spain has a long history. Madrid has pledged 15 million doses to the region.
Other vaccines (Covishield, Sputnik V and AstraZeneca) have been previously provided by India, Russia and the COVAX system.
Nicaragua is currently in the middle of a country wide phase in the Voluntary Vaccination Program to vaccinate anyone 30 or over that wishes to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
Sputnik Light
It was announced on the 17th of September 2021 that 800,000 doses of Sputnik Light were on their way from Russia. The new “single dose” Sputnik vaccine will make it quicker and easier to vaccinate a large percentage of the Nicaraguan population.
COVAX
The COVAX system is a global fund which is involved in developing and sourcing vaccines from other countries. It is a cooperative of The Coalition for the Promotion of Innovations for Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), the World Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The aim of COVAX is the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines around the world for the largest vaccination of program the world has ever witnessed.
