Nicaragua has now received the first delivery of the Sputnik V Russian Vaccine as a donation.

The Nicaraguan government said they will be announcing the General Vaccination Program in the coming days and then revising it later when the Covax and Covishield vaccines have arrived, as well as more Sputnik V.

Although no details were announced on exactly how many doses or how many of the population would receive the first vaccinations, it was announced that those with existing serious illnesses would be the first to be protected.

The government thanked Russia for sending this donation of Sputnik V vaccines against Covid-19. It’s the first delivery of vaccines to Nicaragua from any of the possible sources. The Sputnik V vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya Epidemiology and Microbiology Center and on August the 11th 2020 was the first Covid-19 vaccine registered anywhere in the world.

The Sputnik V Russian Vaccine donation will be used to vaccinate Nicaragua’s most vulnerable, such as those with chronic diseases; kidney failure, heart disease and cancer.

They also said they are waiting for the delivery of the vaccines from other suppliers as a result of signed agreements they have with India for the “Covishield” brand as well as under the Covax Mechanism of the World Health Organization”. In addition, more of the Sputnik vaccine from Russia is on its way.

Elsewhere in Central America, Guatemala has become the tenth Latin American country and the third Central American nation to permit the use of the Russian Sputnik V for Covid-19. As with most of the other nations, the vaccine has been registered for “emergency use”, thus avoiding additional clinical trials prior to its use.

With the list of countries registering the Spunik V vaccine growing, Russia has reminded those countries that given the demand from within Russia (with a population well over 145 million), they have no capacity to meet the high international demand for Sputnik V.

However, The Russian Direct Investment Fund (FIDR) has signed contracts with over a dozen drug companies to produce around 1.4 billion doses (enough for 700 million people using the required double dose).

The sharp rise in worldwide demand for the Sputnik V Vaccine came shortly after the positive reviews in the respected medical journal The Lancet which earlier this month described the vaccine’s efficacy (effectiveness) as 92%.
