Walmart in Nicaragua faces uncertainty with the announcement that as part of its “ongoing strategy to focus on its core businesses and geographies”, Walmart de México y Centroamérica could sell off stores in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Walmart de México y Centroamérica, have announced that Walmart in Nicaragua, along with El Salvador and Honduras face “strategic alternatives” as part of plan to look at “joint ventures, partnerships or alliances or even an outright sale of current operations.

Before making the public statement regarding the future of Walmart in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, the company received approval from the Walmart de México y Centroamérica’s board of directors to pursue options. However, as yet have not announced what they will be.

Walmart has a total of 848 locations under various names in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica (as well as 2,610 in Mexico).

Walmart entered the region in 2005 and became Walmart Centroamerica in 2006. In 2009, Walmart Mexico (a publicly traded company) acquired Walmart’s operations in Central America and in 2010; Walmart Mexico became Walmart de Mexico y Centroamerica. The headquarters are in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Mexico City, January 24, 2022.

Walmart de México y Centroamérica, through its Board of Directors, announced that it is considering strategic alternatives regarding its operations in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, focusing efforts and capital on its main businesses and geographies.

These alternatives could include, but are not limited to, possible joint ventures, partnerships or strategic alliances, a sale or other transactions.

“All our operations in Central America are solid businesses with a differentiated value proposition for the customer, investment in a world-class infrastructure and a platform for significant and well-founded growth,” said Guilherme Loureiro, Executive President and General Director of Walmart de México and Central America. “As we seek to prioritize our resources and accelerate our ecosystem in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Mexico, we believe there may be attractive opportunities for further growth in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, which could be better captured under a different structure.”

All operations of Walmart de México y Centroamérica will continue as normal through this process. As it has always done, the company will continue to comply with all its obligations to its customers, associates, suppliers and all its stakeholders.

The company does not guarantee that the process will result in a transaction. Walmex will inform its shareholders and the investing public in general in accordance with the provisions of the applicable laws and regulations.
