May Day Statutory Holiday

May Day in Nicaragua is celebrated with a statutory holiday for “Día Internacional de los Trabajadores” (International Workers Day).

On Monday May 1st, Nicaragua will join over 80 other countries in support of their labor movements and to celebrate the demands for the rights of workers as well as paying tribute to the “Martyrs of Chicago” who lost their lives after protests for a basic 8 hour working day were initiated on May 1st, 1886. https://nica-biz.com/labor-day-long-weekend-in-nicaragua-may-1st/

This year, 2023, Labor Day falls on a Monday which creates a long weekend.

The Ministry of Labor advises that “May the 1st is a mandatory national holiday with the right to a day off with pay for all workers (state and private) in accordance with article 66 of the Labor Code”.

All workers that are deemed essential services (in the state and private sectors) and required to work on Monday the 1st of May 2023 will receive double time for the hours they work on that day (Article 69 of the Labor Code of Nicaragua). Employees can, if they wish and by agreement with their employer, opt for regular time as payment and take another compensated day off in lieu of the day worked.
