As Nicaragua prepares to join Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama in this year’s Central America Bicentennial, INTUR have already announced that San Juan del Sur will host the “Torneo Centro Americano de Surf” (Central America Surf Tournament) as part of Nicaragua’s celebrations.

The event will be held at Playa Maderas, a few kilometers north of San Juan del Sur between Thursday the 9th and Sunday the 12th of September 2021. Organizers are looking forward to presenting the best names in the sport, including many of Nicaragua’s home grown champions.

Anasha Campbell, the head of INTUR (The Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism) said that “We have included Panama in this event so we have 6 countries competing”. (See note below)

She added “We expect that more than 100 athletes will come to join us in Nicaragua for this special event”.

The first day of the event is usually taken up by the procession of the teams through town carrying their country’s flag as well as a container of beach sand from home which gets poured into a transparent container and mixed. This act symbolizes “the peaceful union of nations through the love of surfing”.

Mayra Solís, the Mayor of San Juan del Sur invited everybody to come and experience the beautiful beaches of the Municipality of San Juan del Sur.

Dexter Ramírez, President of the Nicaraguan Surf Commission added that “We will be selecting the very best surfers to represent Nicaragua in the Central America Surf Tournament, an Olympic-style meeting”.

Channel 6 will be covering the surf competition and will include special segments and reports as well as the awards ceremony.

As reported earlier this year in Nica-Biz, Nicaragua joins Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama in celebrating 200 years of independence from colonization on September the 15th 1821.

Note: Anasha Campbell was referencing the fact that Panama has joined the Central America Bicentennial celebration although their declaration of independence from Spain was two months later than the other five CA nations. Panama celebrates their Independence Day on November 28th.
