Costa Rica Border Hours

Due to Statutory Holidays in Costa Rica, their Immigration Services have announced some changes in Costa Rica Border Hours at various border posts that may affect travel from and to Nicaragua.

The days affected are;

Today, Monday July 26th 2021 (Annexation of Nicoya Day) and;

Monday August 2nd 2021 (Virgen de los Angeles)

Apparently labor law has transitioned the July 25th holiday to the Monday as it will for the August 2nd holiday, which is standard procedure for national holidays falling on a Sunday.

During those two Mondays, border post schedules will be:

Juan Santamaría International Airport: 24 hours

Daniel Oduber International Airport (Guanacaste/was called Liberia): 5 am to 12 midnight

* Peñas Blancas: 6 am to 6 pm

* Las Tablillas: 7 am to 3 pm

* Paso Canoas: 6 am to 6 pm

Sixaola: 7 am to 5 pm

Sabalito: 8 am to 4 pm

* Schedule has been coordinated with the Customs Directorate at each border post listed.

NOTE: Other services provided by Central and Regional Offices of the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners, Costa Rica, will be unavailable as the offices will be closed on Monday, July 26th 2021 and Monday, August 2nd 2021

Costa Rica Border Hours – NORMAL SCHEDULE:

Costa Rica Border Hours

The Annexation of Nicoya Day is celebrated as an historical event when the population of the territory known as Nicoya (now representing most of what is called Guanacaste today) voted in a referendum to allow it to separate from Nicaragua and annexed by Costa Rica on July, 25th 1824. Nicaragua at the time was otherwise busy with a civil war in their country.

La Virgen de Los Angeles is Costa Rica’s patron saint. August the 2nd is a big celebration for our neighbor to the south.
